For this project, Eliza was given 'free rein' to design the front garden with our clients providing a clearer brief for the remainder to the property. The main challenge of this design was creating a practical and cohesive entry which blended seamlessly with the modern 2-storey facade and navigated the steep grade from the street to the portico.
It was clear: a practical & striking entrance was required for this grand home.
A series of floating platforms were designed to step visitors up from the footpath to the front door, instead of a path or long flight of steps. The floating platforms, paved in Silver Travertine, were carefully proportioned to reduce the step height and create an easy ascent to the front door. LED Strip lighting recessed into the risers improves safety, and transforms the steps into a glowing feature at night.
While not required for structural retaining, boulders were positioned to add a natural texture to the space, support plantings and contrast with the clean geometry of the floating platforms and modern facade. To ensure the design intent was maintained our Construction crew worked closely with Designer Eliza onsite to ensure placement was organic and flowed seamlessly with planned plantings.
Hardscape elements were complemented by a layered planting plan, focusing on a mix of native and exotic species which were chosen for colour, resilience and their ability to attract local wildlife. With a list of favourite plants to include, our Clients worked closely with Eliza to develop a planting list, ensuring the garden would be bright with colour and texture in all seasons, and attract local wildlife.
To complete the entrance, a rendered front fence with slatted inserts and automatic gates were chose primarily for their functionality, and the sense of "safety" which they provide.
The remainder of the property was landscaped with a combination of paved entertaining areas & lawn, raised garden beds for fruit trees and vegetables, and freestanding espaliers with creeping vines to create a private and green space for this city home.
